Following the successful run of Laughter on the 23rd Floor, the Adobe Theater is pleased to present Sam Shepard’s Fool for Love.
A finalist for the 1984 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Fool For Love is a confrontation between May and Eddie, former lovers reunited at a desert motel. Eddie shows up to woo May back to his Wyoming farm, complete with trailer. May is uninterested; she is starting over with a new job, a potential new love interest, and doesn’t want to fall back in to the destructive pattern she had with Eddie.
The play is focused on the encounter between May and Eddie, accented by revelations from the Old Man, the onstage appearance of Martin and the offstage threat of Eddie’s “the Countess.” The Old Man’s relation to May and Eddie slowly becomes clearer, simultaneously revealing the nature of May and Eddie’s disfunction.
Shortly after the breakup of his marriage to O-Lan, Shepard described his play in a letter to friend and collaborator, Joe Chaikin, as “a very emotional play and in some ways embarrassing for me to witness but somehow necessary at the same time. Falling in love is such a dumbfounding experience. In one way you wouldn’t trade it for the world. In another way it’s absolute hell.”
The original production starred Ed Harris and Kathy Baker and was directed by Shepard. It opened at San Francisco’s Magic Theatre February 8, 1983 when Shepard was the Magic Theatre’s playwright-in-residence. Shepard himself played Eddie, with Kim Basinger as May, in the 1985 film version directed by Robert Altman.
Among other recognition, Mr Shepard won the 1984 Obie Award for Direction. Ed Harris, Kathy Baker and Will Patton all won Obies for their performances and the play won the Obie for Best New American Play.
Director Jeff Anderson says of the play: “I’ve found this tale explores love in one of the most honest ways I have ever seen. Eddie and May explore sides of love other plays may tiptoe around, or simply ignore: the pain we cause the ones we love; how we carry traumatic experiences of our childhood into our adult relationships; how love can sometimes keep us from doing the right thing; how love forces reconciliation with the demons inside us.”
Vintage Sam Shepard, Fool for Love features: James Schallert as Martin, John Wylie as the Old Man, Heather Yeo as May and Shannon Flynn as Eddie.
Fool for Love opens March 15th and runs through March 31st – just three weeks – at The Adobe Theater, 9813 4th Street NW. Tickets: adobetheater.org, 505.898.9222
