QUARTET, RUNNING APRIL 19-MAY 12
By Ronald Harwood
Directed by Marty Epstein
Quartet, written by Ronald Harwood and directed by Marty Epstein opens April 19 at the Adobe Theater.
“Getting old ain’t for sissies,” as Bette Davis is reported to have said. For Cecily, Reggie and Wilfred, who reside in a home for retired opera singers in Kent, England, getting old comes with well-seasoned wit, barbs and remembrances, fond and otherwise, of their lives and careers.
While those careers are mostly in the rear-view mirror, each year on the 10th of October, there is a concert to celebrate Verdi’s (Joe Green, as the residents refer to him) birthday, and the singers determine to perform the quartet from Rigoletto.
To round out the quartet – and upset the apple cart – Jean, who used to be married to Reggie, arrives at the home. Jean still plays the diva and refuses to sing, but the show must go on in this funny and poignant play by the author of Another Time, The Dresser and Interpreters, which premiered at the Albery Theatre, London.
Ronald Harwood called it “one of my most successful plays” when it was made into the film directed by Dustin Hoffman.
Director Marty Epstein says of the play: “This is a moving, poignant, sometimes funny, other times sad look at people in the autumn of their years when their best years are behind them as they head into an uncertain future. All of us have gone or will go through these emotions whether opera singers or any other retirees. It thrills me to be a part of this play that touches me greatly.”
Quartet features: Georgia Athearn as Cecily (Cissy), Reggie is played by Mario Cabrera, Phil Shortell is the priapic Wilfred and Alaina Warren Zachary plays the grand diva Jean.
Quartet opens April 19th and runs through May 12th at The Adobe Theater, 9813 4th Street NW. Friday and Saturday evenings performances start at 7:30pm, Sundays at 2:00pm. General Admission $20, Discount $17 (Seniors, Students, ATG/PBS Members, Military, First Responders) and PWYW Thursday, May 9th. Opening Weekend Special: All Tickets $15!
